I’M digging into my DEEP COACHING BAG OF TOOLS, to solve the issues that stop you from getting into a healthy fitness habit.

This group is shaping up to be quite homogenious…kind of low to middle fitness level, and a less than stellar record when it comes to success with any fitness program.  To boot many people have some kind of a pain issue to deal with too.

YOU WILL ALWAYS BE WORKING AT YOUR LEVEL.  I promise you we are going to take tiny steps AND SUCCEED!  I have a deep box of coaching experience to draw from.  The homework for session 1 will make you both laugh and cry, because you will know I GET YOU!

IT HELPS A LITTLE BIT IF YOU HAVE ALREADY TAKEN A LEARN CLASS WITH LINDA in the last three years AND HAVE YOUR NORDIXX POLES, but we are going to start from scratch!  THIS IS A GREAT TIME TO BRING A FRIEND OR FAMILY MEMBER with no experience.

June 24 kick-off party in Sooke.  Walk first section of Goose and have lunch.

Sept 16 end-part in Victoria at Glo restaurant (Selkirk Waterway)

This is your passport to summer fun.  Get your PASSPORT.  Walk with the entire gang to start and finish the Galloping Goose, and then through the summer, pole walk each section at your leisure to fill your passport.

RATHTREVOR BEACH DAY! @ CAR POOL TO RATHTREVOR BEACH!

Our Beach Day at Rathtrevor last year is worth repeating…..so we are!

Basically we each pack our beach bags and bring our Nordic poles, then car pool ($10 to driver) to Rathtrevor for a day at the beach.  Bring your beach mat or chair, your lunch, drinks, and snacks, get into your beach clothes.  You can be a kid again!  Pole walk in the sun on the low tide miles of beach sand as often and as long as you want, lay in the sun, wallow in the water, snooze in the shade, visit with new friends.  The high lights last year, other than giving up responsibility for a day and relaxing, was having the time to make new friends, stopping for the best ice cream cone on the island, getting in a little exercise and sunshine, and then stopping on the way home for a great dinner together in Nanaimo.

It was worth it.  People are still talking about the day.  Why don’t we do this more often, we ask ourselves.

THE AUTUMN CLASSIC

is the fun wind-up event celebrating a year of Nordic pole walking, and the growth of our Neighbourhood clubs, and the official end to our season…time changes this weekend.

First we pole walk on the Westshore Walk Way, and then we party at 6-Mile Pub.

YOUR NON-POLING FRIENDS, RELATIVES, SPOUSE, VISITORS ARE INVITED TO JOIN AND WALK.  (Everyone wear your team colours and bring a sign with your team name on it…for the big photo shoot. Team colours means:  similar coloured t-shirts/tops, same hats, your team colour bandanas, or???  Smart teams will be prepared to persuade unattached participants to join their club for the day.) 

 

PRE-REGISTRATION REQUIRED $10 for ALL participants (npw or walking).

HERE’S HOW:

  • REGISTER & PAY through this site

THE WALK: Choose from one of four routes:

  1. Easy Does It….approx. 1.3 km  (slightly undulating)
  2. Once is Enough….one loop of Westshore Walk Way (2.5km)  (mostly flat, some undulations, 2 mild hills)
  3. Loop-de-Loop….two loops of Westshore Walk Way (5.0km) (mostly flat, some undulations, 2 mild hills X2)
  4. Ain’t No Mountain High Enough Challenge for Quads and Trios (one 2.5km loop with two 1.0km HILL loops in the middle)

 

EXPERIENCE THE TRADIONAL “LOVE TUNNEL OF POLES” AS YOU ARRIVE AT THE FINISH.

 

SPECIAL INVITATION!  Do you bake a GREAT “trail bar”?

We are having THE BEST BAR CHALLENGE.

To enter, register for the Autumn Classic, then email Linda4success@shaw.ca indicating your willingness to participate in challenge, and submit your recipe.  You will bake your BEST TRAIL BAR, cut it into 1/2 inch cubes, then at end of pole walking event you will offer a sample to each event participant and vie for VOTES.  (We will have it set up for you,  kind of like a “tail gate” party.  You will receive your $10 event fee back in exchange for your special participation)  All the participants will have one vote and will vote for their FAVOURITE BAR.  The BEST BAR CHALLENGE winner will receive a prize.

EVERYONE IS ENTERED FOR THE PRIZE DRAWS!

TWO TROPHIES UP FOR GRABS

BEST TEAM TROPHY will be won according to a secret formula that fairly ranks teams by number of participants and fitness (finish order).

BEST QUAD TROPHY will be won by the QUAD or TRIO TEAM that completes the HILL CHALLENGE COURSE in the fastest time.

 

PARTY AT 6-MILE PUB

After the exercise/adventure part of the morning, everyone will reconvene at 6-MILE PUB.  We have a big room reserved.  Place your order as soon as you arrive.  FREE nachos will be brought to your table.

EVENT:BearMtn10km @ Bear Mountain, Langford.
Nov 19 @ 8:45 am – 11:00 am

The 10k course has earned the notoriety as “Canada’s Most Challenging 10k” because of three distinct hills on the course, which have been named Papa Bear, Mama Bear and Baby Bear, as well as the many rolling hills throughout the rest of the run. Participants will also run across bridges, past a waterfall and at one point go through a 30m long tunnel before finishing next to the fountain in front of the Westin Bear Mountain.

 

GET ALL DETAILS, AND REGISTER,  ON THEIR SITE.

Register yourself on line at the Bear Mountain 10km event site.  $40 until Oct 1.  Then $50.

 

The pole walkers will organize themselves into quads, trios, or duos, to encourage each other through this hilly course.

EVENT:SantaParadeVictoria @ Legislative Buildings

THIS IS THE MOST FUN EVENT OF THE YEAR!  The pole walkers were the biggest hit of the parade in 2016 other than Santa.  We did a good looking maneuver, and a “wave”.  With mini lights down our poles, we became one of the most fun and colourful parts of this parade for the spectators lined up 10 deep down Government Street.  Everyone is always hesitant about their first participation in this event, but IT IS TRANSFORMATIVE, and instantly becomes the highlight of the year.

EVERYONE CAN DO THIS EVENT!

WE WANT THE BIGGEST ENTRY OF POLE WALKERS EVER THIS YEAR.

The route is approx. 2.5km long, the parade goes slowly, and there are many stops, where we do our group maneuvers!

There is no $cost to you to participate, and you need to wrap mini battery operated lights down each pole, because this event is after dark (streetlights) and is ushering in the Christmas spirit. You can dress up festively if you wish with a hat or scarf, over top of your appropriately warm clothing.

New Blue Bridge Opening Day NORDIC Pole Walk Adventure 12:00-3:00pm

Led by your tour host, retired Olympian, Linda Schaumleffel, this tour will meet near Spinnakers Pub, and pole walk across the NEW BLUE BRIDGE during the opening day celebrations.  Tour consists of pole walk to and across New Blue Bridge, a small tour through new Chinatown, a treat from Chinese bakery, exploration of festivities on Old Blue Bridge, and return to Spinnakers.  Included in tour will be a festive bandana, a group photo on New Blue Bridge emailed to you, an authentic treat in Chinatown, a visit to inspiring art installation, plus historic notes from tour guide, Linda Schaumleffel.  Bonus:  increased fitness because we will be pole walking (so bring your poles).  Friends and family who don’t have poles may borrow poles from Linda and join our tour (reserve poles early, limited supply).

You can get to Spinnakers easily from the Esquimalt, Westshore, View Royal, Penninsula side of town.  Coming across town to Spinnakers, go across on Hillside or Bay Street.  Leave extra time to find parking.  You can also take the bus to Spinnakers.  A smart person might make a reservation at Spinnakers for an early brunch, and then go on Pole Walk adventure.  If you plan to go to Spinnakers after the walk, make a reservation!
